Potential of high-feed milling structured dies for material flow control in hot forming

Abstract Hot forming processes of complex parts with small cavities demand high-performance tools made hardened steels. Their surface can be tribologically modified in order to control the material flow for improving mold filling functional elements. Surface structuring here offers great potential adjusting frictional properties and thus controlling processes. In this study, high-feed milling (HFM) structures hot work tool steel (HWS) components is investigated. The process performance was determined by cutting force measurements life tests. achievable topography measured evaluated terms structure quality roughness parameters, friction were derived based on results. a ring compression test, influence certain variants analyzed. results conclude that HFM suitable HWS constant low wear. addition, variety showed significant test. This indicates relevant modification surfaces improve increase manufactural productivity.
